1977, Lotus introduced the revolutionary Type 78, featuring a sleek monocoque chassis designed for ground effect. A crucial design feature was the wide side pods, shaped internally like inverted airplane wings. During the 1978 season, the evolved Type 79 was introduced. Fuel tanks were positioned behind the cockpit, and the rear suspension featured effective inboard dampers.

Piloting in 1978 were Mario Andretti and Ronnie Peterson. Success came swiftly: Andretti secured 5 victories, earning him the driver's championship. Peterson added another win, clinching the constructor's title for the team. The Type 79 heavily influenced later F1 machines, earning the nickname "Black Beauty" due to its overwhelming speed, graceful design, and black livery.
