The M1A1 Abrams was declared the main battle tank of the US Army in August 1984. The 105mm gun of the early M1 Abrams was replaced by a 120mm smoothbore cannon, significantly increasing its offensive power. Equipped with a highly precise fire control system and a gas turbine engine with a power of 1,500 horsepower, it demonstrated overwhelming combat power in its first ground combat in the Gulf War in February 1991, destroying many T-72 tanks. Various modifications continued thereafter, and in January 2023, the US government decided to provide about 30 Abrams tanks to support the Ukrainian army in the fight against the Russian invasion.
