The Supermarine Spitfire was a single-seat interceptor aircraft primarily used by the Royal Air Force and many Allies during World War II. The excellent maneuverability of the aircraft, originally developed by Supermarine Aviation Works (Vickers), Ltd. under chief designer Reginald J. Mitchell and his successors, made it very popular among pilots.

More than 20,300 Spitfires of all variants were built by Supermarine and its licensees. The aircraft saw action on all fronts throughout the Second World War and remained in service well into the 1950s.
