The ships of the Iowa class were the last great battleships of the US Navy. These included the sister ships BB-61 Iowa and BB-62 New Jersey. However, the most famous battleship of the Iowa class was and still is the BB-63 Missouri. With 212,000 horsepower, the heavily armed colossus could reach a top speed of 33 knots. The main armament consisted of nine 16-inch (40.6 cm) guns distributed among three triple turrets (2 forward and 1 aft) with a maximum range of up to 40 km. The Iowa-class ships were 270.4 meters long and had a relatively narrow beam of up to 33 meters, allowing them to easily pass through the Panama Canal.

USS Missouri was commissioned in 1944 and participated in numerous operations in the Pacific War. On September 2, 1945, aboard USS Missouri, the Japanese Instrument of Surrender was signed, marking the unconditional surrender of the Japanese forces. With the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950, USS Missouri and her sister ships were deployed for fire support and were placed in reserve in 1955. In 1986, the ship underwent a complete renovation, modernization, and was equipped with the latest weapons technology. During the Gulf War in 1991, Missouri was deployed for one last time and retired in 1993 after nearly 50 years of service.
