During the 1960s, the Israeli Artillery Corps upgraded their M4A1 Sherman tank with the powerful French 105mm CN-105-F1 tank gun and re-designated it as the M51S. The longer gun helped reduce recoil, and a counterweight was attached to the end of the gun turret. The 460 horsepower diesel engine and the combination of Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension (HVSS) and wider T80 tracks provide improved mobility to the M51. During the 1967 Six-Day War, the M51s were deployed against the newer T54/55 tanks as well as against the IS-3 tanks of the Egyptian, Iraqi, and Syrian armies. The 105mm gun of the M51 was able to compete with these adversaries due to the use of HEAT ammunition. After the war, the M51 continued to be used and were only phased out in the early 1980s.
